Planer Blades Have Changed Over Time

The manufacture of woodworking planer blades has naturally evolved alongside technological developments. Previously, it was the case that woodworking planers were handheld tools, but this has changed as time has progressed. Contemporary power planers are now the relative tool of choice; and the standard of work being produced with them is benefiting.

These power planers are commonly accompanied by a planning platform. This means that sections of wood can be adjusted more quickly and accurately, subsequently improving the end results. The modern tools can also be operated both manually and electronically dependent on the job in hand.

Sheffield Shop Sign Makers Manufacture Retail Signage for Help for Heroes

Image Sign Studio was pleased to be able to be involved in this project for Help for Heroes as it is a great cause. Help for Heroes is a tri-service military charity which provides support to full time, reservist Servicemen and women and veterans from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. They support veterans and serving personnel who have been wounded, injured or become sick as a result of serving their country, and offer support to their families and dependants as they care for their loved ones.

Illuminated Retail Shop Sign for Help for Heroes

As professional sign makers in Sheffield, Image Sign Studio is lucky enough to be manufacturing and installing a number of illuminated retail shop signs for the charity Help for Heroes. They originally carried out the manufacture and installation of the Help for Heroes shop sign in the shopping centre Meadowhall last year, and they are now manufacturing and installing signs for the shops all over the UK including Birmingham, Peterborough, Essex, Wimbledon and Bromley.

To manufacture the shop signs for this charity, Image Sign Studio used Dibond, which is an aluminium composite material consisting of a polyethylene core and aluminium cover sheet. Dibond is a lightweight yet rigid material, and there are many advantages to using it in sign making. The aluminium alloy is corrosion resistant, making it an excellent choice for shop signs that are likely to be exposed to the elements.

Dibond is also great for printing on too, lending itself especially to digital printing, which is a popular choice for many shop signs Sheffield. Although Dibond is extremely lightweight, it is also very rigid and achieves a perfect flatness. Just what you need for a shop sign!

To manufacture the Help for Heroes signs, a box was made out of folded aluminium composite called Dibond, and stainless steel hollow 3D letters were produced to create the words ‘Help for Heroes’. These letters were then backlit by fitting them with white LED lights to create a halo effect and attached to the Dibond backboard using studs.

Attract Customers over the Festive Season with a New Shop Sign Sheffield

The latest research regarding the UK’s retail spending suggests that people are spending more money in shops than they were earlier this year. Online business Website City AM recently reported that although fewer shoppers visited shopping centres and high streets this summer, retail spending was actually at its highest since January.

The Director of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Helen Dickinson said that although footfall had decreased, the amount of money that was spent by shoppers per trip had actually increased. The data went on to reveal that although footfall has decreased on high streets and shopping centres, it increased by 2.9% in out-of-town retail parks during August 2014.

“It seems that customers are hitting the high streets with purpose – knowing what they want to buy ahead of time, supported by online research – and doing more shopping in a single trip,” Helen Dickinson said.

The Rise of Online Shopping

Online shopping has been a hot topic of conversation for a number of years now as footfall on British high streets has made a gradual, but significant, decrease. But according to Mintel’s Christmas 2014 predictions, although online sales are again set to increase, a whopping 87% of all retail sales will be made in shops in December 2014.

Professional Sign Makers Sheffield

As expert sign makers in Sheffield, Image Sign Studio are well aware of the increasing popularity of online shopping, but they firmly believe that there is plenty of scope for retail shops to claim their fair share of the market. There’s nothing like going into a shop and physically holding a product, then to come home with the item in your shopping bag on that very day. For all the convenience of online shopping, there’s only so much you can find out about the item from looking at it on a screen and reading reviews.

Boost Sales over Christmas with a New Shop Sign Sheffield

So now is the time to ensure that you make the most of attracting the shoppers into your retail store. Online shopping may be as popular as ever, but the research suggests that there is still an enormous amount of people stepping out on the high street, shopping centres and retail parks.

If you are looking for a shop sign Sheffield that will increase your visibility on the high street over the festive season, Image Sign Studio can help. The staff at their Sheffield sign shop will offer you all the helpful advice and direction you need to ensure that your business makes a great first impression. By taking the time to understand the importance of properly maintaining your tools – and knowing how best to use them – you will ensure that the end result for any product that you produce will be of only the highest quality.

You can take maintenance precautions such as implementing the use of an oiled whetstone to care for your blades, as well as ensuring you work the blade with a pushing action. Taking note of advice like this will ensure that your blades work at optimum capacity. Subsequent end product quality will benefit from the accuracy this will ensure.

Knife-Point Provide Planer Blades Choice

Planer Blades Suitable for Many Tasks

Historically; the first original hand planers came into use thousands of years ago, and they have evolved gradually over time to be the effective tools they are today. With origins in both Europe and Asia; the best aspects of continental design have been brought together to allow the variety you see today – such as our 82mm planer blades.

Woodworking planer blades are commonly used to flatten the surface of rough pieces of timber, reducing the thickness of the wood in the process. It is a technique that is used to produce vertical, horizontal or inclined surfaces; with the end result always being a smooth, flat surface.

HSS Planer Blades Manufactured for You

Many of our planer blades are manufactured in T1 18% Tungsten HSS (High Speed Steel); and as such are of extremely high quality. Each piece is supplied hand honed and finished; which enables us to provide you with a perfectly sharp edge; free of nicks and burns.

We offer bars in a variety of lengths; which are each tailored to be suited to individual bespoke requirements. Many of our planer blades are suitable for all types of planers; including four-sided moulders to surface thicknesses machines.

Keeping Your Planer Blades in Working Order

Keeping Your Planer Blades in Working Order

Properly maintaining your tools; and understanding why you are doing so is vital to ensure that you are able to carry out great woodworking work with planer blades. Typically; they are tools which are extremely resistant to heavy duty work – but it is essential that they are properly maintained for this to be true.

Tools such as 82mm planer blades must be kept as sharp as possible. If they are; it means that when carrying out work you will be safe in the knowledge that it will produce the highest quality end product. You can ensure that your tools are in the best possible working order by adhering to maintenance procedures. In the process; you will be taking responsibility of quality control.

Following Steps to Ensure Planer Blade Maintenance

If one of your planer blades requires maintenance, then you will need to follow a number of simple steps to carry out the job successfully. There are a number of resources available to tell you how you can do it best; which include guidelines on using an oiled whetstone, the importance of removing chips on the blade and ensuring that the blade is worked with a pushing action and not a pulling action

When it comes to understanding whether your product needs to be maintained, it is helpful to do your research (we often provide advice through this blog). Perhaps the best way to test the sharpness of the blade is by tilting it up to the light. By observing how the light reflects off the bevel of the blade, you can gauge its condition. If the blade is sharp, then the bevel will appear flat.

Implementing the Use of Planer Blades

It is useful to wait a few seconds when you start up your planer to carry out work. This enables the motor to reach full speed; and the blade can now be eased into contact with the material. From this point, you can push forward at a steady pace, ensuring that you continue to apply pressure on the front of the planer as it meets your piece of work.

When actually implementing the use of planer blades proper balance is essential. Distribution of body weight – by keeping your feet apart in a comfortable position – enables you to maintain the closest control when using a wood planer. Naturally, the end product will emanate accuracy and quality as a result.

Knife-Point as Your Go-to Planer Blades Supplier

Here at Knife-Point we stock an entirety of different blades. Thanks to our incredible range of products, you will always find the right tool with us – no matter what trade you work in or task you need to carry out. We are confident that you will come back to us time and time again; thanks to our dedicated, experienced team. You can view all of our products here, at www.knife-point.co.uk.

Without understanding both the importance of keeping your planer blade in good condition – and also how best to utilize it – not only will your planer blade not work properly, it will also subsequently result in you being unable to produce a high standard product.

Save the High Street with Effective Shop Signs Sheffield

shop signs Sheffield city centre shoppingOver the past few years, Sheffield city centre has lost a few shops. Despite some rejuvenation in the city centre, there are still several Sheffield shop signs that hang over empty windows and rundown buildings with nothing to show inside.

It’s been in the news for a while now that high streets up and down the country are suffering from the effects of the recent recession, the decrease in footfall, and the lack of sales. Newspapers are littered with depressing shots of empty shop fronts and headlines scream about the death of the high street.

But it’s not all bad news, and as professional sign makers in Sheffield, Image Sign Studio is glad to hear it! The broadsheet reports that having more homes near and even in the high street help to develop a buzz in the area, and also provide a readymade consumer market on the doorstep.

The Minister for High Streets, Brandon Lewis says: “To attract people in to the high street, we want them to be exciting and vibrant places to eat and drink, spend leisure time and use practical services as well as shop.” And what else do they need? Great Sheffield shop signs of course!

Increased Independent Shops with Sheffield Shop Signs

Many people assumed that with the rise of internet shopping and out of town developments, the high street would be reduced to practically nothing. But there is growing optimism about the evolution of the high street and its ability to adapt. According to the Daily Telegraph, a recent report shows that 44 new independent shops opened every day last year and retail sales were up 1.7% last months and 3.7% on this time last year.

As you can see from the points made above, there is definitely life in the high street yet. Whether it is rejuvenated by the integration of homes into the shopping mix, or as a result of the upturn in the economy, the British High Street is definitely on the road to recovery.

That ties in to the simple commodity of accuracy. When it comes to the world of craft there are few things worse than using your time on a project to simply see it go to waste through poor cutting. Through the use of Swann Morton or Stanley knife blades; you can ensure precision when carrying out hobby craft work.

Inaccurate features on the card would result in customers feeling unimpressed with products; and resultantly sales of their products would be significantly affected. The knife chosen by the craft artist making the card can be the difference between achieving success and failure in their business.

Aluminium Light Box with Powder Coating

The sign was constructed using an aluminium light box which was then powder coated to match the branding of the bar. Aluminium has a standard silver finish, however, it can be powder coated in any colour to match the corporate identity of the business in question. Powder coating is an effective way of colour matching signage to a business’ existing marketing material, branding and colour scheme etc.

The aluminium light box was then fitted with internal LED lighting in white, so that the letters could easily be lit up at night for an eye-catching effect. LED illumination can be achieved on signage such as this by placing the LED lights onto a back tray behind the lettering of the shop sign. LED lights are a great choice for Sheffield signs such as this because they are guaranteed for 50,000 hours and very cheap to run in comparison with conventional tube lighting.

CNC Cut Perspex Lettering for Sheffield Estate Agent Shop Sign

Image Sign Studio regularly design and manufacture shop signs for all sorts of businesses all over the area. We were asked to make the shop signs for the Sheffield based independent estates agents Whitehornes, who have recently a acquired a new premises at Banner Cross. They also have a  branch on Chesterfield road.

Whitehornes were looking to create a professional image with their signage that would project the image of quality through their new shop signs. Aluminium back boards in blue were used as a backdrop to the lettering, keeping in line with their branding and creating a flawless surface upon which to mount the letters.

CNC Routered Letters in White Perspex

The letters for the Whitehornes shop sign were cut from white Perspex using our very own, in house CNC routeing machine. This machine allows us to cut complex shapes with perfect accuracy from a wide variety of materials. It really is amazing technology, as it gives an incredibly flawless finish to all types of business signage. The 3kW spindle means it can fly through materials with ease, especially Perspex.

The white Perspex letters were then mounted onto the blue aluminium backboard using studs so that they stand proud, raising them slightly to create a 3D effect. The sign was then illuminated using LED trough lights for maximum impact.

PVC Digitally Printed Banner

We were also asked to produce a banner which has been hung vertically above the shop sign. All our banners come finished with quality hems and eyelets so that they can be hung from buildings and ceilings, and can be securely attached to fences and poles too. This banner is made from PVC which has been digitally printed using UV stable ink in order to prevent fading when exposed to sunlight.

We also fabricated brackets to fit on the side of the building which the printed banner has been attached to using eyelets. Printed banners like this one are great for additional signage as they are very durable and hardwearing. This makes them suitable for outdoor use such as on the outside of buildings like this one.

For digitally printed banners and shop signs for your business in Sheffield, contact Image Sign Studio. Give us a call on 0114 261 7617 to chat with our friendly team, who will be more than happy to talk you through the options.

Swann Morton Providers Follow Bear Grylls Knife Thoughts

At the start of the month; the Chief Scout of the Scouting Association – Bear Grylls – caused huge controversy in the national press with some typically outspoken comments; telling the Radio Times that parents should be teaching children “how to embrace and manage risk”; and that children should be encouraged to use knives.

Grylls current project is the Channel 4 programme ‘The Island’; a reality TV show which sees 13 men stranded on a desert island in order for them to learn about manhood. He has also enjoyed massive global success with his hit TV survival show ‘Bear Gryyls: Born Survivor’. His latest comments have come in the wake of promotion for ‘The Island’, and have caused quite a stir; with both The Independent and Telegraph running the story.

He is a celebrator of the outdoors; and has dedicated his whole life to promoting activities that involve it and encouraging the world to embrace their animalistic side. He has been a huge success, and given his current position with the Scout’s; and his popularity on television; it is understandable that his comments pick up so much press.

The recent comments from Grylls included his suggestion that encouraging kids to play with knives could be ‘empowering’ if done in the correct surroundings: “Sometimes in life we get cut,” he said. “My six-year-old recently cut himself on a knife, and came in with blood pouring everywhere, but, you know what? He’s not cut himself again. He learned how to handle a knife.”

This has been considered by a lot of the media to be an insensitive view on the issue of allowing children to possess knives. Grylls has also said, however, that it is essential that knives are treated with the utmost respect and that children are taught how to use them properly: “When I say to budding adventurers, ‘Listen – a blunt penknife is a dangerous knife. Make sure it’s really sharp’ – the kids’ faces light up. Like all kids, they want a mega-sharp penknife – great, but teach them to respect it and use it properly,” he said.

Trimming Knife Blades Manufacturer Looks to History

We at Knife-Point Sheffield are always interested in knife manufacture-related news stories. We have over 30 years of experience in the industry – with historical roots stretching back decades. This influences our fascination with this field of industry; and when we came across this story we found it to be of particular interest.

A historic piece of WW1 memorabilia was stolen between 10am and 1.15pm on Monday 5th May; from a Canvey museum in Western Esplanade. The item is a trench knife or trench dagger; which was taken from a display case within the museum.

Over Bank Holiday Weekend

It is estimated that the incident took place over the most recent Bank Holiday weekend, on the Monday. The knife is thought to have been stolen as members of the public were shown around the museum by volunteers. Allan Reed – a volunteer at the museum – was quick to play up the significance of the theft.

PC Lisa-Ann Gore informed The Enquirer, Essex: “The museum would like to get the piece back as it is very important to them. It is also a weapon and we would like to get it back in safe hands. I would urge anyone with any information to contact me as soon as possible.”

Anyone who may have found themselves being offered the item for sale; or anybody who may have information are being directed to PC Gore at Essex Police. Items such as the knife thought to have been stolen can be extremely valuable; with WW1 memorabilia considered to be of huge importance within the history of product design.

Historical Product Design

The piece is an example of historical product design; and was sure to have had considerable emphasis placed on its design and manufacture.
