Historically; the first original hand planers came into use thousands of years ago, and they have evolved gradually over time to be the effective tools they are today. With origins in both Europe and Asia; the best aspects of continental design have been brought together to allow the variety you see today – such as our 82mm planer blades.

Woodworking planer blades are commonly used to flatten the surface of rough pieces of timber, reducing the thickness of the wood in the process. It is a technique that is used to produce vertical, horizontal or inclined surfaces; with the end result always being a smooth, flat surface.

HSS Planer Blades Manufactured for You

Many of our planer blades are manufactured in T1 18% Tungsten HSS (High Speed Steel); and as such are of extremely high quality. Each piece is supplied hand honed and finished; which enables us to provide you with a perfectly sharp edge; free of nicks and burns.

We offer bars in a variety of lengths; which are each tailored to be suited to individual bespoke requirements. Many of our planer blades are suitable for all types of planers; including four-sided moulders to surface thicknesses machines.

Keeping Your Planer Blades in Working Order

Keeping Your Planer Blades in Working Order

Properly maintaining your tools; and understanding why you are doing so is vital to ensure that you are able to carry out great woodworking work with planer blades. Typically; they are tools which are extremely resistant to heavy duty work – but it is essential that they are properly maintained for this to be true.

Tools such as 82mm planer blades must be kept as sharp as possible. If they are; it means that when carrying out work you will be safe in the knowledge that it will produce the highest quality end product. You can ensure that your tools are in the best possible working order by adhering to maintenance procedures. In the process; you will be taking responsibility of quality control.

Following Steps to Ensure Planer Blade Maintenance

If one of your planer blades requires maintenance, then you will need to follow a number of simple steps to carry out the job successfully. There are a number of resources available to tell you how you can do it best; which include guidelines on using an oiled whetstone, the importance of removing chips on the blade and ensuring that the blade is worked with a pushing action and not a pulling action

When it comes to understanding whether your product needs to be maintained, it is helpful to do your research (we often provide advice through this blog). Perhaps the best way to test the sharpness of the blade is by tilting it up to the light. By observing how the light reflects off the bevel of the blade, you can gauge its condition. If the blade is sharp, then the bevel will appear flat.

Implementing the Use of Planer Blades

It is useful to wait a few seconds when you start up your planer to carry out work. This enables the motor to reach full speed; and the blade can now be eased into contact with the material. From this point, you can push forward at a steady pace, ensuring that you continue to apply pressure on the front of the planer as it meets your piece of work.

When actually implementing the use of planer blades proper balance is essential. Distribution of body weight – by keeping your feet apart in a comfortable position – enables you to maintain the closest control when using a wood planer. Naturally, the end product will emanate accuracy and quality as a result.

Swann Morton Providers Follow Bear Grylls Knife Thoughts

At the start of the month; the Chief Scout of the Scouting Association – Bear Grylls – caused huge controversy in the national press with some typically outspoken comments; telling the Radio Times that parents should be teaching children “how to embrace and manage risk”; and that children should be encouraged to use knives.

Grylls current project is the Channel 4 programme ‘The Island’; a reality TV show which sees 13 men stranded on a desert island in order for them to learn about manhood. He has also enjoyed massive global success with his hit TV survival show ‘Bear Gryyls: Born Survivor’. His latest comments have come in the wake of promotion for ‘The Island’, and have caused quite a stir; with both The Independent and Telegraph running the story.

He is a celebrator of the outdoors; and has dedicated his whole life to promoting activities that involve it and encouraging the world to embrace their animalistic side. He has been a huge success, and given his current position with the Scout’s; and his popularity on television; it is understandable that his comments pick up so much press.

The recent comments from Grylls included his suggestion that encouraging kids to play with knives could be ‘empowering’ if done in the correct surroundings: “Sometimes in life we get cut,” he said. “My six-year-old recently cut himself on a knife, and came in with blood pouring everywhere, but, you know what? He’s not cut himself again. He learned how to handle a knife.”

This has been considered by a lot of the media to be an insensitive view on the issue of allowing children to possess knives. Grylls has also said, however, that it is essential that knives are treated with the utmost respect and that children are taught how to use them properly: “When I say to budding adventurers, ‘Listen – a blunt penknife is a dangerous knife. Make sure it’s really sharp’ – the kids’ faces light up. Like all kids, they want a mega-sharp penknife – great, but teach them to respect it and use it properly,” he said.

Trimming Knife Blades Manufacturer Looks to History

We at Knife-Point Sheffield are always interested in knife manufacture-related news stories. We have over 30 years of experience in the industry – with historical roots stretching back decades. This influences our fascination with this field of industry; and when we came across this story we found it to be of particular interest.

A historic piece of WW1 memorabilia was stolen between 10am and 1.15pm on Monday 5th May; from a Canvey museum in Western Esplanade. The item is a trench knife or trench dagger; which was taken from a display case within the museum.

Over Bank Holiday Weekend

It is estimated that the incident took place over the most recent Bank Holiday weekend, on the Monday. The knife is thought to have been stolen as members of the public were shown around the museum by volunteers. Allan Reed – a volunteer at the museum – was quick to play up the significance of the theft.

PC Lisa-Ann Gore informed The Enquirer, Essex: “The museum would like to get the piece back as it is very important to them. It is also a weapon and we would like to get it back in safe hands. I would urge anyone with any information to contact me as soon as possible.”

Anyone who may have found themselves being offered the item for sale; or anybody who may have information are being directed to PC Gore at Essex Police. Items such as the knife thought to have been stolen can be extremely valuable; with WW1 memorabilia considered to be of huge importance within the history of product design.

Historical Product Design

The piece is an example of historical product design; and was sure to have had considerable emphasis placed on its design and manufacture.
