Sheffield’s history of knife making originates with Benjamin Huntsman’s invention of crucible steel in the 1740’s. A clock maker by trade, Huntsman developed the process for making a quality of steel that had not been available before. The production of crucible steel was developed right up until 1856, when Henry Bessemer invented the Bessemer converter. Thanks to his erection of steelworks in Sheffield, the city’s scale of production increased dramatically.

Sheffield still receives worldwide recognition of its knife, blade and cutlery making skills. Sheffield based Knife-Point have over twenty five years of experience in the knife and blade trade, and are able to supply Stanley knife blades, hooked blades, concave blades and carpet fitting tools to a range of customers and industries up and down the country. Thanks to Sheffield’s excellent reputation as knife makers, Knife-Point is regarded as a reputable and popular choice for business and individuals alike.

Sheffield’s fame for the manufacture of knives and blades escalated in 1912, when Harry Brearley discovered stainless steel. Working from Brown Firth Laboratories in Sheffield, Harry Brearley then allowed his successor Dr William Hatfield to continue the development of the alloy, finally resulting in the patented ‘18-8 stainless steel’ in 1924. This is now the widest used alloy of this type in the world.
